Politics and you…and me

One of the things I love about being an American is that I can have whatever political view I choose. However, some of my fellow American’s seem to feel that my political views are wrong and theirs are right.

Lets remember this one thing, we are all in this together. Being a citizen of the United States of America means you take a stake in the success of your country by electing other citizens to represent you and and to lead the country.

Frankly, I don’t care what “party” has control, I don’t care what religion, race, gender or sexual orientation our elected officials are. Single, married, divorced, separated, living in sin, I don’t care.

What I want is for every American including our elected officials to take a step back and look around. Think about the greater good and not your personal agendas. Our country is very much like a large corporation. As tax-paying citizens we are all shareholders in this corporation. If things aren’t being run right, then it’s time to change leadership.

We are never going to be the powerhouse we once were as a country because as citizens we are too hung up blaming political parties for our problems. In reality it’s apathy that is our problem. We have the power as citizens to make this country better, we have the power to get this country back on track. Unfortunately, we need a leader that has the knowledge and the skill to take the helm and get us there. I say unfortunately because our current outlook is not very rosy.

We have two primary candidates, one of which will be our next leader, neither of which has provided any real reason why they should be chosen for the job. With that, what are we to expect. If we select Obama he will spend his first term working on his re-election campaign for a second term. McCain could do the same thing, but if he were a smart man he would say and stick to being a one term president.

Regardless the United States of America is in a dire situation. We have dug a hole so deep I don’t think in my lifetime we will every make up for the damage caused in recent years. I can only blame myself, I mean I can run for office, I can be a in the Senate or Congress, heck soon I will be old enough to run for President.

Instead of siting in front of a TV or my computer getting angry at all the hate democrats have for republicans and vice versa I could be out there working to make a difference. And you know what’s really crazy, so can you! I know it’s weird, but yeah. You too can go make a difference.

As citizens we need to force change from a different angle, the angle needs to be that being a politician is a job that you will be held accountable for. We need to further change the rules on funding campaigns, and what it means to take on the role. There is NO reason at all any politician should be focusing on a re-election campaign until it is within a few months of the election.

So many candidates waste our money (their salary is paid by us) and time by focusing on their re-election and not on the country. Accountability! Especially with the President, every president is a single term president unless they meet certain criteria by the beginning of the last year of their term. Just like any other job, they need a performance review. I don’t care about polls, there need to be legitimate milestones in every presidential term that if the president can’t meet those goals they can’t run for a second consecutive term. They could run again further down the road, but not in succession. If they are a second term president, well we all know that is about your legacy and what you will be remembered for so maybe there is already enough incentive there, but I’m sure we can add milestones there and that can be directly related to their post presidency benefits.

There are problems with our political system that aren’t about the fundamentals, but the application. The fact that we are stuck in a two party system, and that most politicians are more like used car salesmen (and women) than people that should be making decisions about our country.

Lets be civil with each other in this election year, lets stop trashing the candidates and instead focus on educating the citizens on what is going to be done once elected and lets hold them accountable. Enough is enough, vote for the candidate you think will be the one that can lead us properly and can begin the healing process in this country. I will do the same. Who knows, maybe, just just maybe we will see some change for the better.

One last thing, while you may think it’s funny to send out mass emails to everyone in your address book pimping your political views, it’s not. Unless you want to engage in a civil conversation and truly express your thoughts and concerns about our country and now about why you don’t like some one I don’t want to hear it. I want to know what’s going to be done, not 3rd grade “My Dad is better than your Dad” type talk.

9news.com makes McCain look like a dirty old man

Earlier today the news site I love to hate, 9news.com posted a story about McCain selecting Palin as his running mate. Just take a look at the copy in the first image then the second. Pretty much any male with a juvenile mind, like myself, should get a good laugh.

These images were captured from 9news.com, content within the images and the graphics are copyright of their respectful owners.

Of course the jokes can range from sexual innuendo or related to Palin’s acceptance of oil exploration.

The HTC Dream is coming! (iPhone Competitor)

In my quest for an “affordable” used 1st gen iPhone I came across info on T-Mobiles dive into the iPhone competition with a phone known as the HTC Dream based on Google’s Android open source system. Looking at the demos and reading up on it I think it will be a pretty popular option. I don’t believe anything can topple the iPhone, but if anything this will cause Apple to improve the phone.

As a long time T-Mobile customer I am hoping they reward us with a smoking deal one early offerings, but I’m not holding my breath. Since it is 3G I suspect they will just bend us over on data charges a la AT&T.

Yesterday I read that the Dream finally received FCC approval and along with that T-Mobile has been quietly advertising the date of 10.1.2008 for 3G service to something like 28 cities. Denver being one. I also read that it appears some cities have already been upgraded.

So yeah, all you 1st gen iPhone hawkers who think their beat up 8Gb iPhone is worth $500, you are going to be begging people to take it off your hands by the end of the year. :D

Yeah I am a jerk sometimes. Anyway, I think this is pretty cool So far the iPhone competition in the US is non-existent.

iPhone’s, cracked screens, insane eBayers and me

We have been kicking around the idea of getting iPhones next Spring when our deal with T-Mobile expires. However, buying two new phones, locking into a 2 year agreement and paying twice as much per month is not really desirable. Ok, I don’t mind the contract based rates on the phones, but I mind the contract and service costs.

I got this wild idea after my co-worker got a 2G iPhone from a friend. We are both on T-Mobile and he is working on unlocking his. I thought, maybe I should find a slighly beat up used 2G and unlock it and try it out. I know I want one, but I want to make sure the little lady is certain she wants one. I figure, we can play around with it, if it;s not for us, turn around and probably get our money right back.

I try to be pretty frugal, and I am always trying to pay the least amount I can for something that is nice. I mean who isn’t that way? I thought I would try eBay, the land of suckers. Once again, the cliche of “there’s a sucker born every minute” holds true. Except it’s measured in seconds on eBay.

Personally, I think a 2G 8Gig I phone that is in like new or new condition should be about 200 - 250 depending. I think if it’s brand new and you pay 200 you got a good deal, if you pay 250, not as good as you probably could have. I start with this because it all leads to insane ideas.

Now on eBay there are like almost 900 2G iPhones for sale, ranging from ~$0.99 - $800. Obviously some people are just trying to play on the dumb, others are just letting the preceived market speak for itself. I started looking at phones witch cracked glass to get the best value. I have full confidence I can replace the glass if we decide to keep it, but it was imperative the phone work even with the ugliness. A lot of these damaged phones start off around $50, I would expect based on the amount of damage that they fetch around $125 - $175 depending on extent and other factors. Being already unlocked bumps the price a little of course. On two different auctions the price was getting to be about where I thought it would sell, then the prices sky rocketed. One had terrible cracking and fetched $240. I chalk that up to a very poor photo that I was able to enhance on photoshop and see the actual cracking. Another one went for $182 which was more than I expected it too, but someone is happy I guess. At least the cracking wasn’t on the viewing/use area.

Then there was another, this had tiny cracks in the corners and was very clean otherwise. I knew it would get a little more than I expected. I got in on the bidding in the closing seconds, it hit $175 so I folded. It has $15 shipping and getting that high I knew for just a bit more I could get an undamaged one. In the end someone is paying about $192 + shipping. Which is the other thing to watch for. So what if you get it for $150 if you are paying $25 in shipping on top.

So onto the broken screens. Not a huge deal to me, I did some research and saw a few different methods. One said to get a screen and new digitizer (LCD) which seems ridiculous if the LCD is still fine. That is to the tune of about $150 that I have found online. Sure takes away that affordable iPhone doesn’t it? I mean you can get Apple to do it for $300…ha!

The other method is to not disassemble your iPhone but to break out the broken glass and use goo gone to remove the old adhesive. Then, put a new piece of glass, or plastic in another case, in place. The funny thing here is this method and the first both recommend only using a few drops of glue to adhere the glass to the digitizer.

There is not really anything wrong with that per se, but he whole reason people can still use their iPhones with cracked screens is the adhesive. The overlay screens are glass, which would shatter on most cases, but since it is completely glues to the LCD it might just crack and you’ll fair okay. If you replace the glass and just glue the corners then you risk shattering the glass into a billion pieces all over the place.

I know, fine, what’s the better solution? I don’t know? There is probably a spray adhesive you can buy at a hobby store that will dry clear that you may be able to spray a light coat on then apply the glass. I have no idea if this is viable so if you do it, you do it on your own.

I don’t even have an iPhone, just did some research that’s all. Maybe I will acquire one soon and if it has a cracked screen you can be sure I will try to replace it and fill you in.
